CLINICAL PROFILE OF PATIENTS OF SNAKE VENOM OPHTHALMIA PRESENTING TO THE TERTIARY HEALTH CARE CENTRE

Purpose: To study the clinical profile of patients snake venom ophthalmia presenting to tertiary health care centre. Methods: This was a prospective observational that involved25 with complaining pain, diminution vision, photophobia, conjunctival congestion , chemosis, corneal edema, erosions and anterior chamber reaction. Results: There were 18 males 7 females age group taken 30 75 years. Most common presentation in is pain 92% followed bydiminution vision 90% patients,conjunctival 88% patients, photophobia 84% chemosis 80% edema 65% 55% reaction 35% patients. Conclusion: Snake due spitting reflex mechanism aimed at ejecting forcefully into eyes victims. may contain mixture neurotoxins, cytotoxins, phospholipases cardiotoxins. The ocular effects depend on duration contact surface venom. rare form envenoming which presents as intensely painful blurred associated congestion, epithelial defects
